As I
have worked on this history, I have come to realize how much I owe to my
father, the late Floyd Ulman, who spent his entire life in Augusta
Township on the farm where his ancestors came in the early 1830’s. His
interesting stories and photographs along with mini-trips sparked a love
of the people and places in Augusta Township. Thank you to my son, John,
for helping me collect, organize and edit photographs of the area and
for his time and talent to create the John Herrington painting
reproduced herein. My grateful appreciation to the late Mona Catharine
Herrington who so willingly shared her knowledge and resources,
especially of the Herrington family; also to Ann Snode Rinehart and
Douglas Snode for sharing information from family files collected by the
late R. Edgar Snode and Martha Reid Snode, to Jo Ann Scherr for sharing
information and photographs from her personal collection and to Margaret
and Wayne Grey for information and photographs of the stone houses.
Any
additions or corrections will be gratefully accepted.
