Geocaching

Geocaching

Who doesn’t love a good treasure hunt?! Following a map, searching for clues and discovering “treasure” is exciting stuff, no matter your age.

A modern day version, otherwise known as geocaching, has grown in popularity over the years. Geocaching is a fun, unique way to get people outside. It is basically treasure hunting with global positioning systems (GPS). GPS units can range from your smartphone, to a hand held unit. A geocache (commonly a small box) is placed in a specific location and the coordinates are listed on geocache.com. GPS users then use a cache’s coordinates to help locate the actual cache. The caches typically contain a small variety of trinkets. Users are expected to take one item, leave one item for a future user, sign the logbook, and then return the cache to its original location.

A geotrail is a series of geocaches tied together by a common theme. The Atwood Lake Explore the Shores Geotrail, located in the Atwood Lake Region of Carroll and Tuscarawas counties, will take geocachers to the area’s businesses, hiking trails and more. Not only will geocachers find the caches, they will get to enjoy the beauty of Atwood Lake.

After you complete the geotrail, check out several other geocaches hidden throughout Carroll County. There are known geocaches at Ashton House Museum, Carrollton Quilt Square, Hart Mansion, Bluebird Farm Park and Carroll Community Park.

More information about this trail may be found at bit.ly/AtwoodGeocaching and Geocaching.com.

Carroll County Quilt Square Park

Developed through a Make a Difference Day grant in 2005, the squares were painted by volunteers and are a variation of the popular quilt barn project. It was decided to make a patchwork quilt of items that are significant to the history and heritage of the county. There are 14 patches in the park and the composite quilt is on the side of the Virginia Restaurant at 89 W. Main St. The 14 squares and the significance are: Algonquin Mill - annual festival at historical site; Coley's Stag - one of the last stag bars in the state; Train - railroad history; McCook House -state Civil War museum; Sail Boat - Atwood and Leesville lakes; Daffodil - county flower; Bluebird - county bird; Golf Tee - outdoor recreation; Turkey - hunting tradition; Cows - agricultural heritage; Courthouse Clock - historical building and county seat; Indian - the Indian Great Trail crossed the county; County Outline - unique shape of county. The composite quilt uses the county's Bicentennial Barn as the middle square to complete the quilt.
